Appointments

All appointments are booked in relation to clinical need. Our staff may ask for details of your symptoms to help identify the most appropriate person for you to see. We have a range of appointments available across our multidisciplinary team and our staff will signpost you to the most clinically relevant person.

We will try always to accommodate the GP of your choice though the GP may be unavailable if they are already fully booked on the day you request, working at a different site, on leave or on a training course.

Appointments can be booked over the phone, via our reception desk or via the internet, if you wish to use the internet please let our receptionists know and they will give you the information you will need to be able to log on. You may also book appointments using the NHS app.

If for any reason we have to cancel your appointment we will try to let you know in good time, if we have to cancel at short notice we will ring or text you to advise you. To help us contact you in situations like this please ensure your home and mobile phone numbers are up to date on our system. Thank you

If you would like us to remind you of future appointments please make sure we have your current mobile number on our system, you should then receive a message the day before reminding you of your appointment time. This message will give you the option to cancel to ensure appointments aren’t wasted if you no longer need them.

Extended Hours

We want to make healthcare accessible to all our patients. We can offer our patients extended hours appointments on evenings and weekend mornings, but it is important to note these are not held at St Ann’s Medical Centre.  Patients will need to make their own arrangements for travel to these appointments.

These appointments are for routine care only and are bookable only in advance and not on the day.  Locum doctors work at these practices so patients cannot request to see a specific doctor.

Evening Appointments

Appointments are available for our patients to book on weekdays from  6:30pm to 8:30pm

These are not held at St Ann’s Medical Centre but are held at:

Valley Health Centre,  Dalton
Highthorn Road, Kilnhurst
Broom Lane Medical Centre, Rotherham

Weekend Appointments

There are routine appointments available on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

These are held at:

Saturday morning – Dinnington New Street
Sunday morning –  Broom Lane Medical Centre

To book weekend and evening appointments please contact our reception team on 01709 375500

Care Navigation

A member of our reception team will ask for a brief outline of your problem when you call to make an appointment at the practice. This isn’t because our reception staff are nosy but it’s a new NHS England approach that we call care navigation.

Through specialist training, our team can now offer more choice on who to see in the practice and help you get to the right health professional fast. Our receptionists never offer clinical advice or triage; this is about offering you the choice to see other specialists in our practice team if they have the expertise to deal with your problem; often quicker and without the need to see the GP each time.

For example, we often get calls that can be dealt with by a physiotherapist, the pharmacist, sometimes even the secretaries, that you may not be aware of if you haven’t visited the practice in a while.

By working this way, it helps us to free up time for GPs to care for our patients with complex or serious health conditions. More importantly though, it means you are seen by the clinician that is best placed to deal with your problem each time you visit us. The choice is up to you.

Agencies involved

  • Pharmacies
  • Talking therapies (counsellors etc)
  • Midwifery
  • Contraception and Sexual Health
  • Physiotherapy
  • Smoking Cessation

It would help the team to help you if you were to inform the receptionist why you need an appointment to see a GP.

Carenav

Chaperones

Chaperoning is the process of having a third person present during an examination or procedure. This is to provide support to the patient during their consultation as well as protecting the doctor/nurse against any allegations of improper behaviour during their consultation.

Here at the practice we are able to offer our patients with a trained chaperone at the patients request.

Please ask at reception or the clinician you are seeing if you would like a chaperone present during your consultation.

Telephone Triage

Not every patient needs to be seen for their condition, sometimes a telephone call from the the appropriate clinician will be sufficient.

If you think your problem can be resolved over the phone, discuss it first with our receptionists and they will guide you to the most suitable appointment.

When we are closed

Telephoning

If telephoning the surgery outside normal surgery hours, you will hear a message informing you that we are closed and that you need to hang up and redial 111 to be connected.

Urgent Care Centre

The Urgent and Emergency Care Centre is located on B Level of Rotherham Hospital. The centre has a dedicated external entrance and is clearly signposted.

What is the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre for?

The centre will treat anyone with an urgent or emergency care need.

An urgent care need is something which needs immediate care but isn’t life or limb threatening, such as broken bones, burns and scalds, wounds and minor illnesses including fever, infections and rashes.

If people are unsure of where to go, there are a range of healthcare professionals who are able to advise the best course of treatment including pharmacists, GPs and the NHS 111 service.

NHS 111

In the case of urgent need when the practice is closed you can call NHS 111 (111). Your needs will be assessed and advice offered or arrangements made for you to see a doctor.

NHS 111 is a new service that’s being introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services in England. You can call 111 when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency. NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get the right help, whatever the time.

Out-of-hours services are generally busy so please think carefully before asking to see a doctor and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

In a genuine emergency you should call 999. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.

Home Visits

If possible please try to telephone reception before 10:00 if you require a home visit.

A clinician may phone you back as it may be that your problem can be dealt with by telephone advice.

Visits will normally be made between 11:00 and 14:00, after morning surgery but before their afternoon surgery.

House visits are only usually available for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability.

Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the surgery.
